The WMTC is held every 3 years, hosted by a member of the World Maritime Technology Congress in partnership with 25 of the world’s leading maritime associations. The First Conference (WMTC 2003) was organized in San Francisco by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). The second Conference (WMTC 2006) was conducted in London by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). The third Conference (WMTC 2009) will be hosted, for the first time in Asia, by The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) in Mumbai from January 21st to 24th 2009. The aim of WMTC 2009 is to bring professionals from various countries, organisations and disciplines of marine industry on a common platform to exchange ideas on the latest developments in the maritime world and seek a way forward for working together.

The World Maritime Technology Conference is an influential and prestigious forum for the global shipping community. It is a sound reflection of the strength of the Indian maritime community and the high quality capabilities of Institute of Marine Engineers (India) that the conference will, for the first time, be held in Mumbai. Technology and engineering go hand-in-hand with vessel surveying and classification and so it gives me great pleasure to wish the conference every success.

Mr. Oh, Kong-Gyun,
Chairman, International Association of Classification Societies Ltd.
Chairman & CEO, Korean Register of Shipping,

Eliminating the sub-standard in shipping is a worthy ambition and one which lies at the heart of most of what we try to achieve at IMO. It is possible to point to two broad themes that run through much of our work in this regard; on the one hand are matters relating to the human element in shipping; and, on the other, are technological advances, which play a key role in moving the cause of maritime safety forward.

The Prestigious World Maritime Technology Conference (WMTC) provides a valuable forum for experts from many of the different disciplines that make up the maritime industry to share their progress and achievements with their peers in the maritime field. Similarly, the related exhibition enables manufacturers, shipbuilders and service providers to Showcase their products and services.

The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) is to be congrratulated on having been selected by the World Maritime Technology Congress to host this event in 2009. India is a country in transformation and is now stepping firmly onto the world stage in so many areas. She is rapidly becoming a leader in many sectors of the industry and the choice of India as host for this conference is testmony to her growing importance and status within it. And, as an aside, the fact that this conference will go ahead in Mumbai just a few short weeks after the terrorist atrocities that took place there sends another strong message that the civilized world will not be bowed by their attempts to wreak havoc and disruption.

I wish you a productive and successful outcome to you deliberations, and commend the organizers and their partners for their foresight and vision in bringing this important event to fruition once again.

Mr. E.E. Mitropoulos,
Secretary- General, International Maritime Organization
